Types of Windows

Picture Windows

Picture window, or Fixed Windows, are windows that are designed not to open. Windows with special shapes are often made as picture windows.

Casement and Awning Windows

Casement and Awning Windows are Hinged windows that open to the outside, Usually operated by a crank mechanisim. Casements are hinged on the sides, while Awning windows are hinged on the top.

Horizontal Sliding Windows

Horizontal Sliding Windows, or Gliding Windows, open from side to side.

Single Hung and Double Hung Windows.

Single Hung and Double Hung windows refer to types of Vertical Sliding Windows, windows that slide up and down to open. In a single hung window, only one Sash, usually the lower one, opens. In a Double Hung Window, both Sashes open. Often in a double hung window they are also hinged so that you can tilt them into the room for easy cleaning.

Bays, Bows, and Garden Windows

Bays, Bows, and Garden Windows project out from the outside wall to open up an area inside. Bay windows are typically three windows, where the two side windows project at either 30° or 45°. A Bow is a series of windows on angles to form a smoother curve. A garden window is similar to a bay, but has 90° sides, and usually a glass top.
